Morsi to be tried in court for inciting murder, violence against Egyptian protestors

London, Mon, 02 Sep 2013 ANI

London, Sept. 2 (ANI): Ousted Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi has been referred for trail on charges of inciting murder, torture and violence against pro-democracy protesters outside his presidential palace in December 2012, the state prosecutor said.

According to the BBC, this is Morsi's first referral for trial since July, when he was deposed and held at a secret location.

Investigations have revealed Morsi had asked the Republican Guard and the minister-in-charge of police to break up on the protesters' sit-in against a ruling that expanded Morsi's powers in an Islamist-drafted constitution, but they had refused to obey the order.

Morsi's aides are then alleged to have called their supporters to deal with the demonstrators, the report added.

At least seven people had died and hundreds more were injured in those clashes between Morsi's supporters and opponents in Cairo.

The report added that the date for the trial was yet to be announced.

Meanwhile, the military-backed interim government had cracked down on Brotherhood supporters leading to deaths of hundreds of protestors in the capital.

Fourteen other members of the Muslim Brotherhood who are due to stand trial on the same charges included leading figures in the political wing, Mohammed al-Beltagi and Essam El-Erian. (ANI)
