Deletion of names from voters list to be looked into

New Delhi,Politics, Fri, 23 Aug 2013 IANS

New Delhi, Aug 23 (IANS) The government will approach the Election Commission to look into the issue of voters not finding their names in the voters list at the time of ballotting despite their names being there earlier, said Law Minister Kapil Sibal Friday.

Replying to a query raised by Samajwadi Party member Ram Gopal Yadav, Sibal told the Rajya Sabha that he was aware that some people find their names deleted at the time of voting despite having it in the list earlier.

"The officer does not allow (them to vote). That is a problem we must address," Sibal said.

However, he added that photo voter identity cards help reduce the problem to a great extent.

"If you have a photo I-card, no one can say no," he said.

The members did not appear convinced with the minister's answer and sought to raise more supplementary questions.

Sibal said he would inform the commission about the concern of members. He said some procedure could be adopted that the name is not deleted and, if so, reasons are given.

Yadav said many voters in Uttar Pradesh had their names in the final list during the last assembly polls but when they went to cast their vote, they learnt that the names "had been deleted with red ink".
