' Ridiculous' statements by Congress should be punished, says Ali Anwar

Patna , Sat, 27 Jul 2013 ANI

Patna, July 27 (ANI): Janata Dal (United) leader Ali Anwar termed the recent string of statements made by Congress spokespersons in regard to the poverty line as "ridiculous", saying that those concerned should be punished.

The Congress' constant back and forth with regard to the poverty line in the country has been the focal point of recent political controversies.

"This is ridiculous. It is comparable to rubbing salt on your own wounds. Farooq Abdullah has said that a meal is available at Re. 1. Raj Babbar is saying it is available at Rs. 12. Someone else is saying that it is available at Rs. 5. These people have no idea about the ground realities," Anwar said here today.

Noting that even at a subsidized location like the parliament, food is not available at Rs. 12, Anwar asked: "Which world is Raj Babbar living in after earning so much money in films?"

On Friday Congress spokesperson Raj Babbar attempted to downplay the controversy he spawned by professing that Rs. 12 can buy a complete meal in Mumbai, saying he did not intend to hurt the sentiments of the party or others.

"If my statement has pained someone then I regret it. I don't want my statement to harm my party in any way," Babbar said.

Reacting to Babbar's apology, Anwar said that there was no room for forgiveness. "Forget forgiveness, they should be punished", he said. (ANI)
