Srinagar, May 21 (ANI): The All Hurriyat Conference called for a complete shutdown and a protest march in Kashmir on Tuesday to commemorate the death anniversary of prominent separatist leader Mirwaiz Moulvi Muhammad Farooq.

Riyaz Ahmed, a local resident, said: "On this date, when Mirwaiz Molvi Farooq was assassinated. At that time he was the Chairman of the Hurriyat conference when he was killed. So, to honour him we observe a shutdown. Normally we would march on the occasion but since everyone is under house arrest, so today Kashmir will observe a shutdown."

The city wore a deserted look as markets remained closed and public transport remained off the roads. Most of the schools, across the valley remained closed.

Mirwaiz Farooq was assassinated by some unknown gunman at his residence, in Srinagar on 21st May in 1990. Every year, to commemorate his death, supporters observe shutdown and take out rallies and protest march.

Meanwhile, son of the slain leader and Hurriyat chief, Mirwaiz Omer Farooq has been kept under house arrest in order to prevent him from leading the procession.

Protests and demonstrations have become the norm of the day with locals residing in the state, being tormented with a perennial state of unrest. (ANI)
