Vatican City, April 17 (IANS/AKI) Pope Francis has sent commiserations for the three victims of the bombing at the Boston marathon, saying he was "deeply grieved" by the "act of violence".

Francis called the bombing near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, which also injured 176 people, "a senseless tragedy".

The message to Boston Archbishop Sean Patrick O'Malley urged citizens "to combat evil with good".

Of the 176 people who were treated at hospitals, at least 17 were in a critical condition and 41 in serious condition, according to hospital officials.

One of those killed was an eight-year-old boy and at least nine of the wounded were children.

US President Barack Obama warned that the perpetrators will "feel the full weight of justice".
