New York, Apr 5 (ANI): Disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong, who had admitted to doping and was stripped of his Tour De France titles, has withdrawn from a United States swim meet after he found out that competing would violate his lifetime ban from international sports, imposed last year by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA)
Armstrong pulled out after swimming officials notified his management team that international anti-doping rules prohibited Armstrong from participating in the Masters South Central Zone Swimming Championships in Austin, Texas, the New York Daily News reports.
International swimming governing body FINA said in a statement that it had sent a letter to the US Masters Swimming (USMS), with a copy to the US Aquatic Sports and USA Swimming, requesting them not to accept the entry of Armstrong in the Texas swim meet.
In a reversal to his earlier statement, executive director of USMS, Rob Butcher, said that the board is recognised by the FINA, a signatory to the World Anti-Doping Code, and as such must recognize bans imposed by other signatories, like USADA.
Today Armstrong is banned from entering any sanctioned event that falls under the organizational umbrella of governing bodies that are signatories to the World Anti-Doping Code, which includes any Olympic sport, the report added. (ANI)
