Kanpur, Mar 24 (ANI): The price of flowers in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, is increasing with the festival of colours, Holi, just three days away.

Flowers are being purchased to be ground into organic colour powder for use during Holi.

Talking to media, the coordinator of the flower market, Krishna Kumar Tiwari, said the hike in flower prices is in antici due to the widely celebrated festival of colours, Holi.

Adding on he said, "The increase in price of flowers that you have seen in last four or five days is due to preference of flowers over chemically created colours for celebrating Holi. There are around 1000 temples in the city of Kanpur and people use colours created out of various flowers to celebrate Holi in these temples. Normally, the prices of flowers are not so high but due to the festival, the prices have increased."

Health conscious people nowadays prefer organic colour to synthetic one's, as the use of chemically treated colours harms the health and causes skin diseases.

Organic colours fade out very easily while the synthetic colours stain the skin for longer time.

The processes of extracting organic colours from flowers begin 15-20 days ahead of the festival. During this time, there is a steep rise in flower prices up to 25 percent. Colours are extracted from flowers including roses, marigold among others.

A flower vendor warned and said that use of synthetic colours harms health of people.

"Flowers hold great importance in Holi and nowadays the prices of flowers have increased since chemical colours are used in Holi which harms people and results in illness. That's why people prefer to celebrate Holi with the use of flowers of various colours," said Mahesh Kumar, a flower vendor.

India's festival of colours, Holi will be celebrated on Wednesday this year.

It is the most awaited festival among the Hindus, especially among the youth. People of all ages forget mutual differences and sprinkle-powdered colours on each other to welcome the spring season.

The festival is celebrated with much gusto across India, especially in Mathura, the birthplace of Hindu Lord Krishna, and devotees throng temples in the cities drenched in coloured water.

The festival brings people of all classes and age groups together as they play with colours, distribute sweets and take out processions.

Holi played at Barsana is unique in the sense that here women chase men away with sticks, which is also known as (Lathmar Holi). Males also sing provocative songs in a bid to invite the attention of women.

Legend has it that Lord Krishna visited his beloved Radha's village on this day and playfully teased her and her friends. Taking offence at this, the women of Barsana chased him away.

Since then, men from Krishna's village, Nandgaon, visit Barsana to play Holi in the town which has the distinction of having the only temple dedicated to Radha in India. (ANI)
