New Delhi, March 11 (IANS) Cyberspcace was abuzz Monday with outrage that Delhi gang-rape accused Ram Singh was "allowed" to commit suicide in Tihar Jail and said that he should have been hanged.

As the news of Singh's death trickled in, the social media was abuzz with demands for an inquiry into how he committed suicide.

Retired Indian Police Service officer and activist Kiran Bedi, who once headed the Tihar Jail where Ram Singh committed suicide, hit out at the administration for failing to keep the Delhi gang rape accused under "proper vigil".

"The inquiry ordered into Ram Singh's suicide inside Tihar Jail will reveal the kind of e-watch or (electronic) h-watch (human) he was under," Bedi said on social media website Twitter.

Congress MP and chairman of Jindal Steel and Power Ltd Naveen Jindal said on the website: "Prime accused in Delhi gang-rape commits suicide in Tihar Jail. How was d inmate of a high security prison allowed 2 escape due process of law? (sic)?"

Actor Anupam Kher tweeted, "Ram Singh killed himself this morning in Tihar Jail. My question is, did he? (sic)."

"Ram Singh was sodomised and killed in jail? Looks like ppl can't tolerate any abuse, rape, murder of women. If so, why these things happening daily? (sic)," Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen tweeted.

Former chairperson of the National Commission for Women Poornima Advani tweeted: "Ram Singh's suicide will surely affect the trial in the Delhi gang-rape case. It is a serious lapse on part of Tihar Jail administration."

Singh, 35, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself by the grill of a window in his jail cell early Monday.
