Abu Dhabi varsity gets advanced supercomputer

Togo,Education, Fri, 01 Feb 2013 IANS

Abu Dhabi, Feb 1 (IANS/WAM) Research capabilities at the New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) have got a boost after the institute received the most advanced supercomputer in the UAE.

The NYUAD's high-performance computer (HPC) cluster is named "BuTinah".

BuTinah is connected to Ankabut, the UAE's national research and education network, supporting high-speed connectivity between educational, research, and non-profit organisations in the country.

The equipment was built by Hewlett-Packard.

BuTinah runs at approximately 70 teraflops and consists of 512 super-dense compute nodes, each of which has a memory capacity of at least 48 gigabytes.

Teraflops is the general measure of computational power, which equates to one trillion floating point operations per second.

Additional memory nodes supply 192 gigabytes of RAM, with an additional terabyte node dedicated for NYUAD's Center for Genomics and Systems Biology.

Researchers can access the HPC through their personal computers to run experiments and computations on applications that have been installed on the system, enabling efficient processing of experiments.
