New Delhi, Jan 24 (IANS) Union Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath Thursday expressed concern over the declining sex-ratio, specially in affluent sections of society.
"While children are the future of the nation, it is a cause of national concern that the child sex ratio has been showing a declining trend," she said at a function here on the occasion of the National Girl Child Day.
The decline of sex-ratio in the affluent sections of society was worrisome, she said, adding that the declining child sex-ratio and child marriages were not isolated events.
The child sex ratio of the country, according to Census 2011, is 914 girls for 1,000 boys.
"Cultural preference for male child, combined with technological advances which have made availability of cheap ultrasound machines have resulted in increasing female foeticide," Tirath said.
Former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam said that girls and women were social assets, and they needed to be nurtured and protected.
