The polling begins here today for choosing country's 13th Vice President of India. Members of Parliament of both houses will exercise their franchise to choose between UPA supported candidate Mohammad Hamid Ansari and NDA supported candidate Jaswant Singh.
Existing Vice President Hamid Ansari is likely to win this election as he has larger number of electoral college support.
Out of cumulative 787 MPs of Parliament, approximately 500 electorates may cast their vote in the favour of Hamid Ansari.
Hamid is backed by Congress led United Progressive Alliance government (UPA) in which all parties of UPA alliance along with left parties Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party are supporting him.
On the other hand, NDA supported candidate Jaswant Singh has the support of Bhartiya Janta Party, Akali Dal, Shiv Sena, Janta Dal (United), All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and other smaller parties.
Naveen Patnaik led Biju Janta Dal (BJD) has announced to abstain from voting.
The Vice President is elected through a direct ballot with Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members (including nominated) comprising the electoral college.
Voting began at 10 a.m. and will continue till 5 p.m.
Counting of votes will be taken up at 6 p.m.
The incumbent Vice President is completing his tenure on August 10, 2012.
