Media bodies including News Broadcasters Association (NBA) and Indian Newspaper Society (INS) have jointly opposed the move of Press Council of India (PCI) chairman Markandey Katju to bring social and electronic media under PCI.
Opposing to Katju move, INS in its release has alleged Katju to release the resolution single handedly as according to INS, the resolution has not support of Council members.
NBA in its release has said, "The NBA strongly opposes this move which seeks to negate the self regulatory mechanism that has been in force for several years and has had a very real and positive impact in improving broadcasting standards."
"It is surprised and extremely disappointed at this step, " added NBA.
The broadcasters' body urged the PCI chairman to "engage himself constructively with print media matters, which is the mandate he has under the Press Council Act and not to exceed his remit on commenting upon areas which are outside his jurisdiction".
