New Delhi, Dec 21 (ANI): The sixth accused in connection with the brutal gang-rape of a 23-year-old girl on a moving bus in New Delhi has been arrested from Aurangabad in Bihar.

With the arrest of the sixth accused Akshay Thakur, the police has managed to get hold of all those accused of the rape.

Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar earlier today in a joint press conference with Union Home Secretary R.K. Singh spoke at length about the prompt action taken by the men in uniform in this case.

"Going by the sketchy details given by the person who was with the lady who has been assaulted, we short-listed 317 white-coloured contract carriage buses. And based on the video footage that we got from a nearby guest house, we were able to track down the bus and within 18 hours of the incident we had the bus and its driver whose name is Ram Singh, who is 35 years of age," said Kumar.

"After interrogating him and then we confronted him various other facts, he accepted his guilt and he gave the names of his other co-accused. So, the same evening we managed to arrest Pawan Gupta, Vinay Kumar," he added.

Kumar said the fourth accused Mukesh, who is the brother of Ram Singh had left Delhi and was tracked down to a place called Karauli in Rajasthan and brought to the national capital on December 18.

"Last night, we have also arrested the fifth accused, who is a juvenile. So, we cannot give any further details as per the Supreme Court guidelines," he added.

Home Secretary Singh on his part lauded the Delhi Police for an outstanding job in nabbing the accused in this case.

Widespread protests continue over the brutal gang-rape of a young para-medical student in New Delhi as a large number of women activists and students today marched towards the Rashtrapati Bhavan here demanding stringent action against the accused.

A similar demonstration was organised at Lucknow, Kanpur, Jaipur, Bhopal and Shimla.

The girl, who was gang-raped and attacked with an iron rod, is presently recuperating at the Safdarjung Hospital here.

The girl, who has lost most of her intestine after doctors performed an elective abdominal surgery on her and removed her gangrenous small intestine, is said to be in a critical condition. (ANI)
