New Delhi, Dec. 19 (ANI): Police fired water cannons to disperse anti-rape protesters, mostly students, who were expressing their anger at the rape of a 23-year old girl in a moving bus, outside Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit's residence on Wednesday.

Hundreds of protesters, mostly students, belonging to the All India Students' Association (AISA) and Revolutionary Youth Association (RYA) marched outside the CM's residence, demanding stringent action against the perpetrators.

Protesters shouted anti-government slogans as they camped outside Sheila Dikshit's house to raise the issue of safety of women in the national capital.

They carried placards and shouted 'down with Sheila Dikshit', as they tried to break through the barricades.

However, police stopped the protesters by firing water cannons at them.

A protester said that with the alarming rise in the number of cases of rape, New Delhi has become the 'rape capital' of India and the government is not paying attention to women's security.

"This attitude of the police is shameful, especially, after 600 rapes in the city. It is also highly condemnable that Sheila Dikshit says that the law and order falls under the purview of the federal government. In the past few years, Delhi has become the rape capital and Sheila Dikshit has no answer with regard to the security of women," said a protester.

In order to control the slogan-shouting students, the police fired the water cannons even at the women protesters.

"Such incidents are repeatedly occurring in Delhi. The question that arises is whether the government will take the responsibility of the security of women or not. We have come out to protest outside the residence of Sheila Dikshit and it is shameful that water cannon was fired at us. I am also injured and a male policeman has beaten one of the girls. However, there is no response by the government and the police as to what steps are being taken to curb rapes in the city," said an injured women protester.

The medical student, who was gang-raped on Sunday night and was later thrown out of the moving vehicle in a semi-naked condition, is on ventilator support, battling for life. (ANI)
