BJP counters Rahul's first poll speech in Gujarat

The Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) Tuesday has countered Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi's first speech in which he said that there is no democracy in the land of Mahatma Gandhi and no voice of commonmen were heard in this state.

Rahul Gandhi was delivering his speech in Jamnagar, Gujarat on the last day of assembly election campaign.

Dismissing his claim, BJP's General Secretary of Gujarat Pradesh said that said there was nothing substantial in the speeches made by Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and congress is well aware about its defeat in the assembly election, scheduled in two phases in December.

Rupani said that instead of telling the people what the Congress Party is going to do if it came to power, Rahul kept on propagating the anti-Modi propaganda.

"Rahul Gandhi had to come on the last day of the campaign and Priyanka has not even come. They campaigned for over one month in Uttar Pradesh, but the Congress failed there miserably despite Rahul Gandhi campaigning for the party. The Congress lost very badly there. The Congress knows it very well that they are going to lose in Gujarat as well, so they have brought Rahul Gandhi here on the last day just to show," he added.

Rahul Gandhi, who made his first appearance in the Gujarat assembly election campaign today, claimed that there is a false propaganda launched in Gujarat that the state is making all round progress, but contrary to it there is rampant corruption in the state, unemployment is very high and there is all round failure.

Addressing an election rally in Jamnagar, Rahul Gandhi said the voices of the poor and downtrodden are suppressed in Gujarat, as the chief minister does not want to hear common people's grievances.

"People's voice is not heard in Gujarat. The government of Gujarat and the Chief Minister do not want to listen to you. He wants to hear only his own voice. He has his dream and he thinks only about his own dream. A true leader makes people's dream his own dream," he said.

Rahul Gandhi called Modi a salesman of false propaganda that Gujarat was making all round progress.

"The salesman says Gujarat is shining. But tell me how many hours people get water? People get water for 25 minutes in every three days. But the salesman says Gujarat is shining. There are 10 lakh unemployed youth in Gujarat. But the salesman says Gujarat is shining," he added.

"Gujarat does not have a Lokayukta. RTI (Right to Information) applications are not accepted. Because the voice of the people is not heard here," he said.

The Congress General Secretary recalled how Mahatma Gandhi, who belonged to Gujarat, shared the feeling of the people and said that the Father of the Nation was his role model in politics.

"Many people think Gandhi's thoughts are outdated but I would like to say why I consider him my guru. Sometime we have to make rules in order to adhere to principles," said Rahul Gandhi.

"Gandhiji had said, 'we should listen to the opinion of all people'. Look at the UPA Government and its programmes and tell me of one which has adapted the voice of the people," he added.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh have already campaigned in Gujarat.

In Gujarat, campaigning is in full swing for elections today even as top leaders from all political parties are holding election rallies to impress the voters.

The campaign will come to an end at 5 p.m. today.

Gujarat will go to the polls in two phases on December 13 and 17. The counting of votes will take place on December 20.
