New Delhi,Business/Economy, Tue, 11 Dec 2012 IANS

New Delhi, Dec 11 (IANS) Engineering and infratsructure major Larsen & Toubro Tuesday signed an agreement with Thales India for providing signalling and communications systems for Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) project.

The communication-based train control (CBTC) and integrated communications and supervision (ICS) systems will be implemented for the HMR lines 1, 2 and 3, covering 72 km of rail and comprising 66 stations.

The French defence, aerospace and transport major outbid Siemens and Bombardier, which were in the fray for the HMR contract.

"This is a landmark contract being the first CBTC project in India", Thales senior vice president (transport) Jean Pierre Forrestier told mediapersons here.

Thales will design, build, deliver and manage the installation of the SelTrac communications-based train control solution.

According to the company, the success of CBTC has already been proven globally as more than 30 of the world's largest cities' metro systems use the Thales signalling system, transporting 3 billion passengers each year.

The integrated communications and supervision systems supplied will build on the success of previous supervision projects in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Jaipur.

Thales will deliver its comprehensive ICS package made up of data transmission, public address, passenger information display, fault reporting facilities, office automation and information technology, CCTV, access control and intrusion detection, master clock, telephony, voice recording and radio tetra systems.

The L&T HMR, a public-private partnership (PPP) project, is the Indian firm's largest urban development project and is expected to trigger robust economic activity and generate employment in Hyderabad, said M.V.Kotwal, L&T president, heavy engineering.

The greenfield project will be deployed in six stages and will cover three key corridors of the historic capital city of Andhra Pradesh.

Under the integrated coordination of a central control operations facility, trains will operate automatically, with an attendant on board.

L&T incorporated a special purpose vehicle, L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited, to implement the project on a design, build, finance, operate and transfer (DBFOT) basis.
