India's first innings against England fold on 316, Dhoni hits half-century

Kolkata, Dec 6 (ANI): Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni's timely 52 runs lifted India to 316 against England on the second day of the third Test at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday.

Dhoni's late few runs seem inadequate and the onus now shifts on India bowlers to bring their team back in the third Test. The Indian skipper was the last wicket to fall on 316 caught by Swann on Steve Finn's delivery.

England bowled really well, especially Panesar and Anderson. Panesar dismissed Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma in his successive overs on the second day in Kolkata to give early breakthrough on Thursday.

An intense first day's play saw India score 273 runs and England pick up 7 wickets. A day that saw brave batting displays from opener Gautam Gambhir, and Sachin Tendulkar.

After early losses of Virender Sehwag and Cheteshwar Pujara, Gambhir played solidly and reached his half-century. After his departure, Tendulkar took over the reins and battled his way to a gritty 76.

Tendulkar played a composed innings under pressure facing 155 balls and hitting 13 boundaries in the process. Gautam Gambhir scored 60 while Yuvraj Singh 32.

Captain Dhoni 22 and Zaheer Khan for no score, were at the crease when stumps drawn yesterday.

Dhoni would be under pressure to salvage their reputation as India now have lost five of the six Tests they have played against England in the last 15 months.

Teams:

India: MS Dhoni (Capt.), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Cheteshwar Pujara, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Ravichandran Ashwin, Zaheer Khan, Pragyan Ojha, Ishant Sharma.

England: Alastair Cook (Capt.), Nick Compton, Jonathan Trott, Kevin Pietersen, Ian Bell, Samit Patel, Matt Prior, Graeme Swann, Monty Panesar, James Anderson, Steven Finn. (ANI)
