Shopkeeper, son fired at by robbers

New Delhi, Nov 21 (IANS) A 75?year?old shopkeeper was shot and injured by unidentified masked men in their attempt to rob him here, police said Wednesday. When his son tried to intervene, the robbers also opened fire at him.

Jyoti Ram Garg, resident of Seelampur, was shot twice in Brahmpuri area of east Delhi around 9 p.m. Tuesday, a police officer said.

Jyoti Ram was walking to his car after shutting his shop in Brahmpuri when he was waylaid.

"The assailants held Jyoti Ram hostage at gun point and tried to snatch his bag. When he resisted, they shot him in his hand and thigh," said the officer.

When the shopkeeper's son Ramchandra Garg tried to intervene, he was also shot, but the bullet missed him. The assailants fled from the spot, added the officer.

"Jyoti Ram said he was carrying his lunch box in the bag, which the assailants assumed to be full of cash," the officer said.

He was rushed to Guru Govind Singh Hospital where doctors said his condition is out of danger, according to police.

A case has been registered and a probe is on to nab the culprits.
