New Delhi, Nov 2 (IANS) Many members of Residents' Welfare Associations (RWAs) in Delhi Friday responded with anger to Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit's statement asking people to pay their power bills or face disconnection of electricity.
Vishwas Nagar RWA member Lalit Mohan Sharma said that after the polls, the chief minister would see for herself whose "power" gets disconnected.
Many RWA members demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit.
Anil Bajpai, a member of an RWA in east Delhi, said the chief minister's statement felt like a threat. He said the hike in power tariff by the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) would mean a power bill that was 100 percent higher.
"RWAs have demanded the resignation of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit for helping Discoms and putting pressure on ordinary people," Bajpai said.
Bajpai said the steep hike in power tariff was made by DERC under the guidance of Sheila Dikshit, based on a false plea from private power distribution companies in the capital.
"Instead of setting up a probe against such a hefty hike, and examining the private power distributors BSES and NDPL, Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit chooses instead to threaten affected residents. This shows that she backs corrupt Discoms, not Delhiites," Bajpai said.
Members of RWAs, meanwhile, have said that they would protest on the streets and stop paying power bills and burn effigies of Chief Minister Dikshit.
The RWAs said they would oppose the hike in power tariff till the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) finishes the audit of accounts of private distribution companies.
The RWAs have alleged that the people of the city are forced to pay hefty power bills because of the wrong policies of the Delhi government and the fudged accounts of power distribution companies, which actually earn large profits.
