Fidel Castro pictured looking 'very well' in first 'public appearance' in months

London , Mon, 22 Oct 2012 ANI

London, Oct 22 (ANI): Revolutionary Cuban leader Fidel Castro has appeared in public for the first time since March, refuting persistent rumours that he was gravely ill.

Venezuela's former vice president, Elias Jaua, showed reporters a photograph of the 86-year-old retired Cuban president, stating that the pair had held a five-hour meeting.

Castro then apparently personally accompanied Jaua to a top hotel in Havana, after their meeting on Saturday, the Telegraph reports.

"He had the courtesy of bringing me to the hotel," Jaua said, adding that Castro looked "very well".'

The hotel's general manager, Antonio Martinez, who was also in the picture, also said that Castro was looking 'fine'.

"Yes, he was here yesterday, the same old Fidel with his beard and pink cheeks. He was fine," Martinez said.

Castro's health has been the subject of intense speculation for years, but the rumours gained force in recent days after he failed to publicly congratulate his ally Hugo Chavez on his October 7 Venezuelan electoral victory. (ANI)
