Goa Chief Minister's flipflop over bomb explosion threat

Goa,Politics,Defence/Security, Fri, 14 Sep 2012 IANS

Panaji, Sep 14 (IANS) Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar was left a harried man Friday after news came that there had been a bomb explosion in a north Goa tourist resort, which later turned out to be false.

Parrikar, who was attending a meeting of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators at the state secretariat, rushed out seconds after he was informed by the Director General of police's (DGP) office about reports of "an explosion" at Aguada, a beach resort village in north Goa, 20 km from here, which houses two five-star properties operated by the Taj group.

A hassled-looking Parrikar, wearing a maroon shirt rushed out of the secretariat, only to realise seconds later that there was only a threat of an explosion rather than an actual explosion, and that there had been no untoward incident.

"There was some intimation to the police DGP that there was an explosion in Goa. Therefore, I ran. I was later told there was only a threat of an explosion," Parrikar told reports, adding that a red alert had been issued.

Parrikar also said that one of the reasons behind the reported threat could have possibly been because of the docking of the USS Gridley, a US naval ship, which had docked at Goa's Mormugao Port Trust (MPT), in south Goa, for a rest and recreation visit.

"Therefore, we are putting a red alert," Parrikar said.
