'Romney supporter' TV host Pat Robertson tells man to become Muslim to beat 'rebellious' wife

Washington, Sept. 12 (ANI): Controversial televangelist Pat Robertson joked about beating the wife as he advised a man to put his 'rebellious' wife in her place.

A viewer named Michael wrote to television program 'The 700 Club' to ask Robertson for advice on his wife, who he said 'has no respect for me as the head of the house' and 'even went as far as stretching her hand to beat me'.

"Well, you could become a Muslim - then you could beat her," Robertson said.

According to the New York Daily News, Robertson's co-host Terry Meeuwsen responded with a chuckle. "But in lieu of that?" she prompted him.

"I think this man's gotta stand up to her and he can't let her get away with this stuff," Robertson said, adding: "I don't think we condone wife-beating these days but something's got to be done."

Robertson's comments comes a week after he sat directly behind the podium as Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney addressed supporters at a Virginia Beach rally.

According to the report, Romney spent more time on social issues than usual at that event, hitting the Democratic Party for not initially including language about God in its platform at the convention.

"That pledge says, 'Under God,'" Romney said. "I will not take God out of our platform. I will not take God off our coins and I will not take God out of my heart."

According to the report, during the "700 Club" segment, Robertson went on to offer a psychological reason for the wife's misbehavior, calling her a "rebellious child" who probably had temper tantrums as a girl.

"She does not understand authority. When she was growing up, nobody made her behave and now you've got a 13 year old in a 30-year-old woman's body and she is acting like a child," he said, adding: "Now what do you do with that? You can't divorce her, according to the Scripture, so I say move to Saudi Arabia!" (ANI)
