One dead in JVM-Police clash in Ranchi

Ranchi , Mon, 03 Sep 2012 ANI

Ranchi, Sept 3 (ANI): Violent clash broke out between activists of Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantric) and police here on Monday, leaving at least one dead.

Earlier in the day, Samresh Singh, legislator of JVM (Prajatantric), ripped his shirt in assembly to protest government apathy in resettling villages displaced during the construction of the Bokaro Steel Plant.

Discontent with the state government's lackadaisical attitude in rehabilitating the villages, Singh broke into the well of the assembly and tore is shirts to register his angst.

An unruly mob indulged in arson and stone pelting, forcing policemen to baton charge and firing tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.

Pradeep Yadav, an activist said the state government never paid any heed to their demands and was using violent and forceful ways to evacuate them.

"Government is not ready to consider our demands. That is why we came out on road to demand justice for victims of displacement. JVM is leading the protest and we are demanding government to constitute a committee to rehabilitate the displaced victims, off hook the agricultural land and grant compensation and jobs as promised at the time of displacement," Yadav said.

Justifying the baton charge, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nishikant Dubey, said JVM activists took law in their hands by damaging public property.

"What will state government do if you will try to damage government property by collaborating with miscreant elements and start tearing off your clothes in state assembly. They were trying to obstruct government work, roads and setting things on fire. People were facing problems in commuting, so government was not left with any other option other than baton charging and firing tear gas shells on the protesters. They just did what was required o maintain law and order," he said. (ANI)
