Job seekers at Maruti's Manesar plant prey for agents, touts
Gurgaon, Aug 18 (IANS) As Maruti Suzuki announced the termination of over 500 permanent workers and restoration of operations at its Manesar plant from Aug 21, job aspirants in the company have became prey for placement agencies and touts.
Placement agencies and touts from Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are sending people to Manesar assuring them jobs in the company.
Maruti Suzuki's top brass Thursday had officially announced the termination of 546 permanent workers out of 1,528. Nearly 1,900 contract labourers were sacked.
The company claims that contract workers have been suspended till the second week of September.
"After the announcement of resumption of work at Manesar, thousands of people have visited the company seeking jobs," security officer M.K. Tiwari told IANS.
Annant Kumar, Hemant Sharma and Alizan from Rajasthan's Jhunjhunu and Alwar districts said they read a pamphlet in a newspaper offering jobs in Maruti. They paid Rs.3,000 to a man near one of the Maruti factory gates.
Kailash Chand from Mathura and Bhupender Yadav from Mainpuri of Uttar Pradesh said they gave Rs.2,000 each to a placement agency for a job in Maruti, but the agency's representative later went missing.
"We were told that Maruti was replacing its entire staff and we would surely get a job if we pay some money," said Ashok from Faridabad.
"Some policemen deployed near the factory gates and the company's security guards are also involved in the malpractice," said a local, who did not wished to be named.
"We haven't received any such complaint yet. We will certainly take strict action if we recieve any complaints," deputy commissioner of police (south-east) Maheshwar Dayal told IANS.
A Maruti spokesman said that the company was not hiring and that they would prefer contract labourers. "We will look into the matter involving guards in malpractice," he added.
Violence erupted in the factory July 18, 2012, which claimed the life of a senior Maruti Suzuki official and resulted in injuries to 96 supervisors and managers. Following the violence, the Manesar plant was shut down.
The company has sent termination notices to 500-odd workers, including 154 who have been arrested for the violence.
The company has announced it would restart production at the plant from Aug 21, and produce only 150 cars daily to begin with.
