R.S. Pura (Jammu and Kashmir), Aug 17 (ANI): A day after another ceasefire violation by Pakistani troops claimed the life of a Border Security Force (BSF) soldier here, firing and shelling by Pakistan Rangers continued in the R.S. Pura sector on Friday, triggering panic among local residents and forcing them to move to safer havens.

Pakistan Rangers opened fire with small and heavy arms and also fired mortar shells, making it the ninth firing incident in last 12 days, the fourth in the last 36 hours.

A local, while attempting to take shelter under a bush, said they were living under threat, as Pakistani troops had been firing since Thursday night.

"There is so much firing taking place. As of now, five to six mortar shells have been continuously fired. We are feeling very scared," said Rajpal, a local.

Another local said that a gunshot cracked the glass windows of their house, adding that they do not feel safe, as firing could begin any time.

"There was firing from the Pakistani side, which cracked the windows of our house. The children had gone to school. How can we be safe, when firing can start anytime?" Aftab Shaikh, another local, remarked.

Inspector General, Border Security Force, Jammu, Rajeev Krishna, informed that one security personnel succumbed to his injuries and added that the firing persisted throughout the day due to the strong response given by the BSF.

"Yesterday, an incident took place, in which one of our security personnel was injured by a sniper bullet and later he succumbed to his injuries. It is a very serious incident; we have taken it very seriously. There is no role of border guarding in case of such incidents, so we gave a firm reply following the incident. This is why the firing from their side continued. In the morning today, provoked firing began from their end. A very strong response has been given by the BSF and right now, firing is not there," he said.

Earlier on Thursday, the Sub Divisional Magistrate of R.S. Pura sector, Suraj Rakwal, had said that machinery has been put in place to tackle any untoward threat from across the border.

"There was firing from 7:30 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. in the R.S. Pura sector on August 16. One of the Border Security jawans lost his life. We had alerted our administration and our senior officers are monitoring the situation and administration is ready to tackle any problem," Rakwal had said.

On August 5, Pakistani soldiers had targeted another picket in R.S. Pura sector in Jammu without any provocation. (ANI)
