Boxer Mary Kom promises to strive for gold at 2016 Olympics
New Delhi, Aug 16 (ANI): Ace boxer Mary Kom, who won a bronze medal in the 51kg flyweight category at the London Olympics recently, on Thursday said in her thanksgiving speech that she is determined to win a gold medal at the 2016 Olympics at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Speaking at a felicitation function organised by Monnet Ispat and Energy Limited, the five-time world champion said, "We need support for the coming Olympics at Rio from the entire boxing team. We would try to give our best at the Rio Olympics, not the bronze, we are going for the silver or gold."
Cash rewards were given to the members of the boxing team for their commendable performance.
The reception was hosted by the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation that lauded the boxing team for their good performance in the Olympics and acknowledged that the world has taken notice of the potential of the Indian pugilists.
Interacting with mediapersons, president of Indian Amateur Boxing Federation, Abhay Singh Chautala, said, "The kind of performance our boxers have shown at the 2012 London Olympics is commendable. The chiefs of other federations from different countries had also lauded the Indian boxers, saying that these (Indian boxers) are the future of the sport." (ANI)
