Chinese fishermen detained in Sri Lanka released

Colombo, Aug 6 (IANS) The 37 Chinese fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy Sunday night have been released, the Chinese embassy in Colombo said Monday.

The embassy was notified by the Sri Lankan authorities that two Sri Lankans, who were detained along with the Chinese, were under investigation while the Chinese fishermen were allowed to leave their boats, Xinhua reported.

A Sri Lankan Navy spokesman said the fishermen on board two fishing trawlers were arrested off the eastern coast of Batticaloa for illegally fishing in Sri Lankan waters.
