Labour party tries to make most of Games' 'socialist' opening ceremony

London, July 30(ANI): Various Labour politicians have expressed joy over the Danny Boyle directed opening ceremony of the London Olympics, with many sharing the opinion that it has been the best advert of the party in years, which has also intensified the row over its political undertones.

Some Conservative politicians raised their concern over the political connotations of the opening ceremony, which at one point made a feature of the symbol popularized by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.

The opening ceremony featured a tribute to the NHS, starring real nurses in period costume.

Tory MP Aidan Burley was slammed on Friday for describing the ceremony as 'leftie, multicultural crap'.

Education Secretary Michael Gove is believed to have voiced concerns about the political messages in the ceremony.

The government sources had acknowledged that some 'suggestions' were made to Boyle, but denied that a private screening of rehearsals for Cabinet ministers had aggravated any major storm.

Carl Sergeant, a minister in the Welsh government, took to Twitter to describe Friday's opening ceremony as 'the best Labour Party political broadcast I've seen in a while'.

Sergeant further taunted Prime Minister David Cameron, by saying: "Working class history, multicultural, NHS, CND, gay kissing. Well done, comrade Boyle! Bet Dave is wriggling!"

Cameron had earlier called the opening ceremony 'a great showcase for this country'.abour MP Paul Flynn said: "Wonderfully progressive socialist sentiments and ideas were smuggled into the opening romp."

A survey by pollster Survation yesterday found that only 15 per cent of viewers thought the ceremony was 'too political'. (ANI)
