Man U starts new season with 1-0 win over AmaZulu in pre-season tour opener

London, July 19(ANI): Manchester United has started their new season with a 1-0 win over South African club AmaZulu in their first pre-season friendly game in Durban.

Japanese international Shinji Kagawa was given a two-minute debut during the dying minutes of the game, replacing Javier Hernandez.

Italian striker Federico Macheda scored the only goal of the match in the 20th minute as United opted to play a good mixture of young, untested players along with experienced players, as many of United's senior players were absent from the pre-season tour due to Euro 2012 or Olympic commitments.

Surprisingly, summer signings Kagawa and Nick Powell started the game on the substitutes' bench as manager Sir Alex Ferguson instead opted to start with the transfer-seeking Dimitar Berbatov and youngsters such as Robbie Brady, Jesse Lingard, Scott Wootton and Frederic Veseli.

With Rio Ferdinand the only senior figure in a youthful back four, AmaZulu were able to create chances as the game wore on and United relied on goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard to deny the hosts, The Telegraph reports.

Now, United fly to Cape Town on Friday ahead of the friendly against Ajax Cape Town at Green Point Stadium. (ANI)
