Over 350 booked after Haryana farmers-cops clash
Gurgaon, July 17 (IANS) More than 350 people were booked Tuesday after villagers clashed with police and vandalised government offices in Haryana's Rewari district, 55 km from here, a day earlier.
Police have registered a case of rioting, attempt to murder, assault on public servants, obstruction of government work and abetment of offence. No one has been arrested though.
The clash occurred Monday after farmers started a protest against the Haryana government's move to acquire nearly 3,800 acres of agricultural land in 16 villages of the district for developing industrial sectors through the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation.
A Bharatiya Kisan Union leader, a state BJP member, several village leaders and women have been booked.
Rewari Deputy Commissioner C.G. Rajinikanthan has imposed prohibitory orders Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, banning any gathering of five or more people, in a radius of 100 metres around the district mini-secretariat, where the clash occurred.
Due to this, the protestors moved to a spot some distance away from the secretariat and continued their sit-in. They also gave a call for a shutdown in Rewari and Bawal Wednesday.
The government employees, apprehensive about the situation, kept their work suspended Tuesday.
Gurgaon Divisional Commissioner T.K. Sharma also visited the mini-secretariat and took stock of the situation.
Indian National Lok Dal general secretary Ajay Singh Chautala, who visited Rewari Monday night, condemned the incident and demanded relief for the farmers.
