Here's what nuclear bomb explosion sounds like!

New York, July 17 (ANI): The footage of an atomic blast, which took place at Yucca Flat, Nev., on March 17, 1953, has been digitalised by the U.S. National Archives.

The footage has just been uncovered by science historians, including Alex Wellerstein of the American Institute of Physics.

Wellerstein explained that the video is remarkable because it is one of the only archival videos of a nuclear blast in which the audio has not been edited or overdubbed with stock sound of an explosion.

"Most films of nuclear explosions got dubbed. If they do contain an actual audio recording of the test blast itself (something I'm often suspicious of-I suspect many were filmed silently and have a stock blast sound effect), it's almost always shifted in time so that the explosion and the sound of the blast wave are simultaneous," the New York Daily News quoted him as saying.

The black-and-white video was captured from about six miles south of the test site.

Clouds of smoke precede the audio. Wellerstein told the non-scientifically inclined that the delay between the smoke and sound is because the "speed of light is much faster than the speed of sound, and the cameras are kept a very healthy distance from the test."

The explosion sounds similar to a shotgun blast followed by thunder.

At the end of the video, a military official is heard as saying that the test "went very well."

"I was very interested in how the troops reacted. I didn't find any solider there that was afraid," he said.

According to Wellerstein, the video was part of a wider program to help manage public fears about weapons testing. (ANI)
