Centre launches import-export facility in Srinagar
Srinagar, July 16 (ANI): The central government issued the Import Export Code (IEC) to boost the export of the goods here recently, leaving handicraft exporters and artisans happy.
Announcing the development, Muzaffar Ahmad Munshi, Director of the Kashmir Handicrafts Department, said that with the facility coming up in Srinagar, exporters would not have to visit Jammu to procure the code.
The facility was suspended after the emergence of militancy in the state in the early 90s, he added.
"Kashmiri handicrafts are export oriented. We want to empower our people dealing with handicrafts. We used to have this facility prior to 90's at Srinagar, but because of certain law and order problems the office got shifted to Jammu," Munshi informed.
The handicrafts are presently being exported to various European countries.rtisans expressed happiness over the decision, saying this would boost their sales.
"This is a good step. Due to poor law and order situation in the last two decades, the handicrafts were suffering losses," said an artisan, Mohammad Yaqoob Dar.
The traditional work of Kashmir art includes shawls, carpets, papier mache products, crewel, silk, copper utensils and walnut wood carving products. (ANI)
