Egypt military warns Morsi it 'expects everybody to respect constitution'

Cairo, Tue, 10 Jul 2012 ANI

Cairo, July 10 (ANI): Egypt's military council has said the decision to dissolve the country's parliament must be upheld, and stressed that all state institutions must respect constitutional declarations.

The remark by the Supreme Council of the Armed forces (SCAF) came after new President Mohammed Morsi issued a decree ordering the country's Islamist-led parliament to reconvene.

According to state-run media, the SCAF, which ruled Egypt until Morsi's election last month, underlined the 'importance of the constitution in the light of the latest developments.'

Only hours after the top court on Monday rejected the decree by Morsi to reconvene parliament, the military said it was 'confident that all state institutions would respect constitutional declarations,' News24 reports.

The Supreme Constitutional Court had said certain articles in the law governing parliamentary elections were invalid, annulling the Islamist-led house. (ANI)
