Syrian official paper says Geneva meeting brings nothing new
Damascus, July 1 (Xinhua-ANI): A Syrian government-owned daily said Sunday that the Action Group meeting on the Syrian crisis held one day earlier in Geneva brought nothing new.
Al-Thawra daily said in an op-ed that the Geneva conference did not come up with anything new, charging that some participants aimed to place more hurdles in the way of the mission of UN-Arab League special joint envoy Kofi Annan.
Signaling out Washington for criticism, the paper said the United States had worked hard to "capture details through which it can place more obstacles" in front of Annan's mission.
It said the U.S. administration is still "backing the armed groups on ground and securing their appropriate climate to undertake more terrorist acts."
The paper accused some participants of the Geneva meeting of deliberately ignoring the presence of armed groups on ground, " which are blessed and backed by some Arab countries with the bless of the U.S. and its western allies."
The Action Group comprising of world powers met Saturday in Geneva and agreed upon a roadmap for a Syrian-led transition to end the 16-month-long conflict.
A joint communique after the meeting said the global community wish to see "an end to the violence and human rights abuses" and the Syrian people enjoy rights to "independently and democratically determine their own future."
The meeting specified steps and measures to secure an full implementation of Annan's peace plan for Syria.
The key steps for transition, as the meeting concluded, include the establishment of a transitional governing body that includes members of the present government and the opposition, an inclusive national dialogue process, and a review of the current constitution and legal system.
In a recent interview, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad rejected "any non-Syrian, non-national model-whether it comes from big countries or friendly countries"-to resolve the violent conflict.
"No one knows how to solve Syria's problems as well as we do," he said. (Xinhua-ANI)
