Gilani's disqualification a victory of law: Imran Khan
Islamabad, June 21 (IANS) The disqualification of Yousuf Raza Gilani as Pakistan's prime minister by the supreme court was a victory for the constitution, cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan said Wednesday.
The judiciary fulfilled its obligation by ensuring the supremacy of law, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf chairman said at a press conference.
However, he said the problem will not be solved with a new prime minister, and added that early elections were the only solution, The News reported.
The apex court Tuesday ruled Gilani stood disqualified as prime minister and member of parliament because its April 26 verdict held him in contempt of court for refusing to write to Swiss authorities to reopen graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.
A three-member bench led by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry heard a set of constitutional petitions challenging National Assembly Speaker Fehmida Mirza's ruling that despite conviction for contempt of court Gilani could continue as prime minister.
In April, the apex court had sentenced Gilani only 'until the rising of the court', or till the time the judges left the court chamber. That was only for about 30 seconds after the verdict was handed down.
