Mumbai, June 17 (ANI): Two suburban trains collided in Mumbai late on Saturday night after they accidentally came on the same track, completely throwing suburban railway services out of gear.

However, no casualties were reported.

Chief Public Relation Officer (PRO) of Western Railways, Sharat Chandrayan, informed that the buffers of two suburban trains, one bound north and another bound south hit each other, derailing three coaches of one of the trains.

"There was slow local train and it was diverting towards the fast. This slow local train was leaving for Churchgate and the other local, which was in the opposite direction, was on fast local and was going to Virar. The train that was going to Virar had stopped for a while, as there was some problem in the unit. Three coaches have derailed and as per the available information nor our there any casualties, neither any injuries. Some of the trains have started running and in the next two hours the services would be restored," said Chandrayan.

The incident involved a train scheduled from Churchgate to Borivli and another train scheduled from Virar to Churchgate.

Due to the disruption, commuters were either stranded or delayed.

Though the witnesses said that some of the commuters have suffered injuries in the incident, however, the officials said it would take some time to figure out the details.

"The arrival time of the train is 10:49 pm at Andheri platform. The train arrived and waited at the platform for 15 minutes for train cooling. When it left the platform, it collided with the other train. Many people have been injured of the incident; children and elders have also suffered injuries. The rain was scheduled from Churchgate to Virar," said Mohan Karnik, a local.

The cause of the incident is not yet ascertained, but according to media reports, the cause of the incident may be due to a signal or track failure.

Latest media reports said irate commuters resorted to minor stone-pelting compelling Railway Police to evict them from the railway platforms.(ANI)
