London, June 15 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Danish coach Michael Laudrup has taken charge at Swansea City on a two-year contract, the Premier League club said Friday.
Brendan Rodgers turned down a contract extension to take the vacant Liverpool job earlier this month after leading Swansea to 11th in their maiden season in the Premier League.
"Contracts were completed at noon today (Friday) on a two-year deal," said the club statement.
Laudrup, 47, was famous as a midfielder for Barcelona and Real Madrid, making a shock switch to the Madrid team from Barcelona in 1994.
As a coach, he led Spanish side Getafe to the last 16 of the UEFA Cup in 2008 before leaving to take the Spartak Moscow job later that year, only to be fired in 2009 after a run of poor results.
Laudrup took over Mallorca a year later and resigned at the end of the 2010-11 season, after a dispute with the board when the team finished 17th in the Primera Liga, one place above the relegation zone.
