Peafowl in Hasanpur died of hunger and thirst: Experts

Gurgaon, June 13 (IANS) The peafowl that died in Hasanpur village, near here, early this week succumbed to hunger and thirst, the post-mortem examinations of the birds revealed Wednesday.

At least 11 peafowl have died in Hasanpur since Monday.

A two-member special team from Hisar's Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Science (LLRUVAS), headed by professor in the department of public health and epidemiology N.K. Mahajan, conducted the post-mortem examinations on the birds.

Mahajan told IANS: "Possibly due to the unavailability of suitable food and water, the peafowl developed dehydration and died."

The LLRUVAS special team, along with a team of local doctors, visited the area where the dead birds were found. They advised the locals to clean the small water bodies in the village and replace the water regularly until the arrival of monsoon.

The team warned of more deaths of peafowl if proper arrangements for food and water were not made.

Wildlife conservator Vinod Kumar said that providing proper food and water was the collective responsibility of all people.

"With limited staff and a wide range to cover, we can only motivate society. We are thinking of managing awareness camps," Kumar said.
