Di Matteo pips Guardiola to earn one-year deal as Chelsea's new boss
London, June 11(ANI): Roberto Di Matteo is set to become new permanent Chelsea manager, as club owner Roman Abramovich has accepted defeat in trying to lure former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola.
Chelsea would offer the Italian just a one-year contract despite winning the FA Cup and the elusive Champions League with the team after stepping as Andre Villas-Boas' successor.
Talks have been going on for the past week, with Di Matteo increasingly confident that he would secure a deal, although he would be disappointed over the length of the contract.
Senior figures at the club remain unsure about the former West Bromwich Albion manager being the right man to take over
According to The Telegraph, Di Matteo is prepared to accept the offer and is expected to sign a new contract when he returns from a holiday in the United States later this week.
Di Matteo's current deal, as interim head coach, expires at the end of this month. His assistant, Eddie Newton, is also expected to agree to a new contract.
Even though there is an acknowledgement within the club that Di Matteo enjoyed a huge slice of fortune, there is a belief that he should be credited with the way in which he galvanized the team and turned the season around. (ANI)
