200 tonnes of fish found dead on Japan coast

London, June 8 (IANS) Nearly 200 tonnes of dead sardines have washed up on the shore of a western port town in Japan, a British media report said.

The massive shoal started washing up in Ohara, facing the north Pacific Ocean, June 3. The bizarre phenomenon has now gone out of control, the Daily Mail reported.

The reason behind the incident has not yet been identified.

People in the town in Chiba prefecture are now carrying the rotting remains in truck to landfill sites. The huge amount of dead fish has created an unbearable smell.

Last year, millions of dead fish were found floating in a California harbour after apparently becoming trapped and dying due to lack of oxygen.

People suggested that high winds might have pushed the sardines into the marina south of Los Angeles.
