US students protest 'stringent' school uniforms on 'Slutty Wednesday'

New York, June 7 (ANI): Manhattan's top-performing high school students bared their bodies in "risque" outfits on Wednesday, to denounce their school's conservative dress code, which bans the exposure of shoulders, midriffs lower-backs, bras and undies.
The Students from Stuyvesant HS held the so-called "Slutty Wednesday" protest after girls got fed up with being told throughout the year that their short skirts and sleeveless tops made them more fit for a dance floor in the club than for a seat at the best public school in town.
Boys too joined in complaining that the administration's apparent emphasis on keeping the girls well-covered was not only biased, but it also maligned the guys as horny teens, who can't control themselves when they see too much skin, the New York Post reported.
"We work our asses off here and school is about learning. Clothing is not important," said ninth grader Lucy Greider, who said she's been sent to the office 10 times this school year for over-exposure.
The dress code, which was introduced in the fall, bars students from wearing tops, which inscribe saying or drawings that aren't in good taste.
Seams of the shorts, dresses and skirts aren't permitted to end above the fingertips when students extend their arms down at their sides.
Early last year, Principal Stanley Teitel told the student newspaper that when the dress code was first under consideration, the policy was intended to create a better learning environment.
"The bottom line is, some things are a distraction, and we don't need to distract students from what is supposed to be going on here, which is learning," Teitel told The Stuyvesant Spectator. (ANI)

Oh goodness, not again. We are not protesting 'stringent' school uniforms. We do not have a school uniform. We simply have a dress code. Which is not 'strict' or 'conservative' and does actually have some fair points. It is a given that there are some things that need not be exposed in a school environment, a circumstance that carries over to professional environments. We protest unfair enforcement. If they tell us we must wear clothing that extends past our fingertips, and we do, then the administration has no right to call us out when we are in fact following the rules. I simply want to get some facts straight as a current Stuyvesant student before people get the wrong idea all over again.
