Youth gear up to make Jorhat a plastic free city

Jorhat (Assam), May 27 (ANI): A group of young students in Jorhat, Assam, have launched a drive to stop the use of plastic bags.

These students are going around the city and the district persuading people to stop using such bags, as they believe it is causing irreparable damage to the environment promoting global warming.

They have been meeting housewives, students and businessmen to explain the danger of using plastic.

The 10-member group spends two hours every day collecting plastic bags from the streets and disposes them.

The campaign is the brainchild of Rupjit Mahanta.

Mahanta said: "We request all shop owners and their customers to avoid using polythene bags. We ask people to use other bags instead of plastic, which will keep our city clean and also give us a healthy environment. And in this, the people are supporting us."

Mahanta said the campaign was started on May 1 and has got a positive response from the business community and the common people.

"Using plastic causes environment pollution especially during the rainy season. So, creating awareness will help us a lot. And I think this group has done a great job not only for the people but also for the environment. I really appreciate it," said one student, who is participating in the camapign.

These boys are also a part of a popular theatre group Replica in Jorhat.

They use theatre as a medium to promote their campaign against the use of plastics.

Each of them performs a minute long play daily against the plastic menace.

Debojit, a Replica member, said: "We are trying our level best to make people awareness to avoid using plastic polythene, which is causing so many problems for the environment so it should be banned immediately to protect our earth."

Their efforts are a source of inspiration for many and are worthy of emulation. (ANI)
