New Delhi, May 22 (ANI): UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday said the government is committed to sustainable and inclusive economic growth of the country.
Gandhi, also the president of the ruling Congress Party, said the government is committed to the welfare of the common people, the down trodden and the SC/ST minorities and Women.
Gandhi also took potshots at the opposition, which has constantly criticized the government over issues of corruption and policy decisions.
"Will not let an aggressive and often irresponsible opposition undermine our achievements," she said in her remarks at UPA II's third anniversary today.
She said the government is committed to strengthen legislation to ensure transparency and responsibility in administration.
Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, who presented the report card of UPA-II, earlier said that there was a 'need to do better'.
"It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this function to mark the completion of the third year of the second UPA government. I believe that the annual Report to the People that we are releasing today presents an objective statement of what we have achieved in office over the past year. I welcome an informed and constructive debate on our performance," said Dr. Singh.
"We will be the first to say we need to do better. But let no one doubt that we have achieved much," he added.
Dr. Singh said the government is aware that there is public frustration and anger on the issue of corruption.
"We know there is public frustration and anger on the issue of corruption. I wish to assure our people that we are working sincerely to address this issue through both legislative and administrative measures. Legislation is before Parliament to establish a Lokpal, ensure time-bound delivery of goods and services and judicial accountability," he said. (ANI)
