Lokpal Bill's passage through Rajya Sabha remains uncertain
Kolkata/Ahmedabad, May 20 (ANI): With Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee stating that the Lokpal Bill is under the consideration of the Rajya Sabha, the uncertainty over the passage of an effective anti-graft bill continues to mount.
"Only two days are there (before the end of the current session). The Lokpal is under the consideration of the Rajya Sabha. There is no need to press any move, but the business advisory committee will have to take it up. You will have to wait for the next few days," Mukherjee told media in Kolkata.
Former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and Team Anna member Kiran Bedi had earlier said the Central Government is not serious about endorsing an effective Lokpal Bill, since it would be like sounding the death knell for corrupt politicians.
Another Team Anna member Manish Sisodia had also echoed similar sentiments, saying that an effective and strong Lokpal Bill couldn't be expected from a cabinet that has corrupt ministers
"How can a country hope for a tough anti-graft law from a cabinet which has 16 ministers who have charges of corruption against them? We have absolutely no hope from this cabinet," added Sisodia
He also said the government was just buying time and it was all a drama to fool the people
The Lokpal Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha during the winter session of Parliament in December 2011.
The Rajya Sabha broke up for recess on December 29, 2011 without voting on the bill to create a Lokpal before the deadline set by activist Anna Hazare, who led a campaign for the measure. (ANI)
