Former Sri Lankan army chief to be freed: legislator
Colombo, May 16 (Xinhua-ANI): Former Sri Lankan Army Commander Sarath Fonseka is to be freed from prison soon, a legislator said Wednesday.
Opposition legislator Tiran Alles said that he met President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Wednesday and discussed Fonseka's release.
Alles said that there were some outstanding issues which needed to be sorted regarding Fonseka's release and those issues were discussed in the meeting. "Once those minor issues are sorted I'm confident we will be able to secure General Fonseka's release soon," Alles told local media.
The legislator, who is a member of the Democratic National Alliance, a political party formed by Fonseka before he was jailed in 2010, has had several rounds of discussions with the president in a bid to secure Fonseka's release.
Fonseka was arrested and jailed after he contested against Rajapaksa for the post of president during 2010 elections.
He faced charges of harboring army deserters, illegal arms dealing and allegedly telling a local newspaper that soldiers shot dead unarmed Tamil Tiger rebels who had surrendered during the final stages of the war.
Fonseka led the army during the final battle against the rebels which eventually led to the defeat of the rebels in May 2009.
Sri Lanka will this week celebrate the third anniversary of the end of the civil war and there is strong speculation that Fonseka will be freed as part of the celebrations. (Xinhua-ANI)
