$1,000 sundae made with 23-carat gold named world's most expensive
London, May 11 (ANI): New York restaurant, Serendipity 3's Golden Opulence Sundae has been listed as the Guinness Book of World Records' most expensive dessert, costs a staggering 1000 dollars and is covered in 23-carat gold leaf.
Serendipity was a favourite among celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and Jackie Kennedy and later featured in a Kate Beckinsale rom-com.
So special is this sundae that customers eager to sample its delights must ring in their orders two days in advance to allow time for the rare ingredients to be flown in from around the world.
According to Barcroft Media, around 50 people a year stop by to sample the unique flavour of the Opulence Sundae, often to mark special occasions such as anniversaries, graduation celebrations and sweet sixteen birthdays.
Made from the finest Tahitian Vanilla ice cream infused with Madagascar Vanilla to intensify the flavour, the decadent dessert is then wrapped in edible gold leaf.
Drizzled with the world's most expensive chocolate, Amedei Porcelana, and topped with chunks of rarest Venezuelan Chuao chocolate, it is no wonder that Executive Chef Joe Calderone calls it 'iconic'.
Almonds coated in gold and candied fruit from Paris soaked for many months that cost 100 dollars per pound, are sprinkled upon the delicious frozen vanilla cream.
Resting neatly on top is a small glass ramekin of sweet Grand Passion Caviar infused with passion fruit, orange and Armagnac.
To complete the masterpiece, the sundae is embellished with a gilded sugar flower that takes eight hours to create, chocolate truffles and marzipan cherries.
For such a precious treat, an equally valuable serving dish like the 300 dollars Baccarat Harcourt crystal goblet is used.
As a memento of the one-of-a-kind experience, the goblet is the customer's to keep.
Serendipity has been serving up The Golden Opulence Sundae for eight years since the idea was conceived in anticipation of the restaurant's 50th anniversary.
"We thought what better way to celebrate this milestone anniversary than to create this golden deluxe treat and get a Guinness World Record?" the Daily Mail quoted the proud chef as saying.
As the ambitious team experimented with recipes, ingredients were flown in from all across the globe until they came up with the winning combination of flavours.
"When all the ingredients come together we achieve the most extravagant ice-cream sundae. The rich flavours, and the uniqueness of it all makes it worth 1,000 dollars," Calderone added.
Erin Jistel, 30, from Dallas, Texas, told Barcroft: 'It's very decadent, very delicious. It's absolutely amazing. It's very light, especially the chocolate-covered candy, but delicious. This is absolutely worth 1,000 dollars." (ANI)]
