New Delhi/Lucknow, May 10 (ANI): The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) on Thursday took Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav to task over the honour killing comment made by a senior police officer, saying the mentality of the cop is a reflection of the state government.
"The mindset of the officials is as per the government. They (government officials) have been told to move ahead with the same mentality. If the SP or DIG makes such comments then you can imagine how will the people feel that they are safe?" asked BSP leader Satish Chandra Mishra.
Mishra further said the women are not safe even during the daytime.
"Today, in Uttar Pradesh women and girls have stopped coming out of their homes. If they have to move out due to some compulsion, then they leave behind their chain and other valuables at home. They try to come back fast so that they do not meet with any unpleasant incident, which is taking place nowadays," he said.
Akhilesh Yadav earlier today said action would be initiated against a senior police officer of the state if he has made the honour killing comment.
Akhilesh said that the senior officer should respect the dignity of his post.
"It is true that through you (media) the statement of a senior police officer has come. If that is the statement, then it is a very wrong statement because one expects justice from the police. If an officer holds such a high post and does not take his rank seriously then action, will be initiated against him," he said.
National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Mamta Sharma had earlier on Wednesday expressed her anger and dismay over the police officer's comment, saying that the Uttar Pradesh Government should suspend the latter.
Saharanpur DIG Satish Mathur has allegedly been caught on camera telling the father of a missing girl that had she been his daughter, he 'would have killed her and committed suicide'.
The IPS officer allegedly made the callous remark when Shaukeen Mohammed approached the police to track down his daughter, saying he believed she had eloped.
The local journalists, who were present at the police station, allegedly recorded the comments of the senior police official on camera. (ANI)
