Congress leaders meet PM, complain against 'vendetta politics' in Punjab
New Delhi, May 7 (ANI): Accusing the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Government in Punjab of practicing 'vendetta politics', Congress leaders from the state met Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh here on Monday, and asked him to look into the matter with some seriousness.
Punjab state Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh after the meeting said the Central Government must look into the matter.
"The Akali Dal (has) unleashed vendetta politics. There are hundreds of cases being reported from every district, and we said that there has to be some assurance given to the people that the Government of India, which is our government, should be looking into this matter and stopping this from happening," he said.
Singh further said that industrial units needed to be promoted in Punjab in order to address the rampant problem of unemployment in the state.
"Unemployment is at an all-time high, 47 lakh unemployed in Punjab. So, we have said that some industrial units will have to be given some concession, both in the border areas and in the rest of Punjab, where we can get industry to come in to mop up these unemployment figures," he said.
Singh, who was the chief minister of Punjab from 2002 to 2007, accused the Shiromani Akali Dal Government in the state of delaying in the procurement of wheat from farmers, risking damage to the harvest due to rains.
"The state government has not procured wheat even 20 days after the harvest. The federal government gives funds both to the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and to the Punjab government, so it is the latter's duty to procure. It is also the responsibility of the FCI to look into the matter," said Singh.
"The other, we have asked for a bonus (because) there has been a lot of crop damage. Prices have risen, and we've said that a 100-rupee bonus should be given to the farmers, as Rajasthan has given. It's not the first time it's been given here," he added. (ANI)
