Amazon Kindle Fire shipments plunge to less than 750,000 in Q1, 2012

London, May 5 (ANI): Sales of Amazon Kindle Fire have reportedly fizzled from 4.8 million in the last quarter of 2011 to fewer than 750,000 in 2012.

According to International Data Corporation (IDC) "a steep drop in shipments of Android-based tablets offset a strong quarter from Apple and caused the media tablet market to miss projections for the first quarter of 2012".

It said total worldwide media tablet shipments for the quarter reached 17.4 million units in 1Q12, 1.2 million units below IDC's projection for the quarter, The Telegraph reports.

According to the firm, this was a quarter-on-quarter decline of 38.4 per cent, which was even steeper than the projected 34 per cent.

Kindle Fire saw the sharpest decline as it fell from 16.8 per cent to "just over 4 percent" of the global market share.

According to the report, this puts Amazon in third place, behind Samsung, while Apple continues to dominate tablet sales.

Apple has reportedly shipped 11.8 million iPads during the quarter, down from 15.4 million units in the fourth quarter of 2011, and grew its worldwide share from 54.7 per cent in the final quarter of 2011 to 68 per cent in the first quarter of 2012. (ANI)
