Shillong, May 4 (IANS) The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Friday demanded Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma's resignation over the deteriorating law and order situation in the three insurgency-ravaged districts of Garo Hills.

"The chief minister should take moral responsibility for his failure to contain the law and order situation in Garo Hills. We demand his immediate resignation," NCP legislator Conrad K. Sangma told IANS after meeting Governor R.S. Mooshahary.

On Thursday, Sangma apprised Home Minister P Chidambaram on the law and order in the western part of Meghalaya in the wake of a 133-hour shutdown in Garo Hills sponsored by the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA).

"The situation is very tense in Garo Hills... If he (Mukul) cannot handle the situation, he should immediately step down and let someone else handle the situation," Conard Sangma said.

The GNLA, which wants a Garoland state to be carved out of Meghalaya, has forced a 144-hour shutdown, which entered the fifth day Friday.
